Java Tea - Orthosihon Staminus Benth

Pokok Misai Kucing is the Malay name for Orthosiphon staminus Benth, a medicinal herb found throughout Southeast Asia and in tropical Australia.
The plant is known by many other names including Kumis Kucing and Remujung (Malay), Orthosiphonblaetter, Indisher Nierentee, Feuilles de Barbiflore, Java Tea, Javatee, Kidney Tea and Yaa Nuat Maeo.
Misai Kucing is an herbaceous shrub which grows to a height of 1.5 meters. It is a popular garden plant because of its unique flower, white and bluish with filaments resembling a cat’s whiskers. In the wild, the plant can be seen growing in the forest and along roadsides.
Misai Kucing herbal tea is traditionally used for kidney bladder stones, liver, gallbladder, diabetic problems and urinary tract infections as it has a mild diuretic action which is useful for flushing the kidneys and urinary tracts. It is also used to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. It is also taken for rheumatism and gout, although its effectiveness for these problems has not been scientifically verified. Researchers have found it to be mildly antiseptic as well.
